Today, the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe proudly recognizes Mississippi River Day 2026, honoring the cultural, spiritual, ecological, and historical significance of Misi-ziibi (Great River) to the Anishinaabe people and all who depend on its waters.

For generations, the Mississippi River, Leech Lake, and the surrounding watershed have sustained our people by providing food, transportation, trade routes, medicines, and a connection to our traditional way of life. These waters continue to support our communities and remind us of our shared responsibility to protect them for future generations.

This proclamation calls upon Band members, community partners, and all who live within the watershed to:

• Honor the cultural and spiritual significance of Misi-ziibi
• Learn about the river’s history and ongoing stewardship
• Protect water quality and natural habitats
• Participate in activities that celebrate and preserve the river

As we observe Mississippi River Day, we reaffirm our commitment to environmental stewardship, traditional ecological knowledge, and the protection of the lands and waters that sustain life.

Miigwech to all who work to safeguard our rivers, lakes, wetlands, and natural resources for the generations yet to come.
